"Lycos (tm) is the catalog of the Internet. The Lycos web explorer searches the World Wide Web every day (including Gopher and FTP space), building a database of all the web pages it finds. The index is updated weekly. The Pursuit search engine provides probabilistic retrieval from this catalog, taking a user's query and returning a sorted list of hits (the list is sorted by match score, and only documents with scores above the threshhold are retrieved)."

Archie, Gopher, FTP Search Engines
Need Software??? Try Archie, Veronica, Jughead and Gopher searches to locate files at anonymous FTP sites.
Archie Services
List of WWW Archie Services - Archie can search anonymous FTP sites for files (particularly useful for searching for software). ArchiePlex explains the different services Archie provides. There are several interfaces that can be used with Archie Servers. A search can be done by ArchiePlex using:

Alex allows users to find and retrieve the full-text of documents on the Internet. It currently indexes over 700 books and shorter texts by author and title, incorporating texts from Project Gutenberg, Wiretap, the On-line Book Initiative, the Eris system at Virginia Tech, the English Server at Carnegie Mellon University, and the on-line portion of the Oxford Text Archive.
